an ep...

Wide Awake in America is a four-track EP released in 1985. It collects various B-sides from the era, which had only been available in the UK, along with a previously unreleased live performance of the song "Bad".

It was originally released only in North America and Japan but sold so well that it charted in the UK as an import. It was re-released internationally in 1990.

The EP's centerpiece, "Bad", a song about heroin addiction, would become a staple of their live set, particularly after a remarkable extended performance at Live Aid in which Bono dances with a girl in the audience.

   1. "Bad" (live) (7:59)

   2. "A Sort of Homecoming" (live) (4:06)

   3. "The Three Sunrises" (3:52)

   4. "Love Comes Tumbling" (4:45)

"Bad" (live from Wembly)

If you twist and turn away, if you tear yourself in two again

If I could, you know I would, if I could, I would let it go

Surrender, dislocate

If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind

Leave this heart of clay, see you break, break away

Into the night through the rain

Through the half-light, through the flame

If I could through myself, set your spirit free

I'd lead your heart away, see you break, break away

Into the light, through the day

So let it go, and so fade away

To let it go, and so to fade away

I'm wide awake

I'm wide awake

I'm not sleeping

Oh, no, no

I'm not sleeping

If you should ask well maybe they'd tell you what I would say

True colors fly in blue and black, bruised silken skies and burning flak

Colours crash, collide in blood shot eyes

If I could, you know I would, if I could, I would let it go

This desparation, seperation

Condemnation, revelation

In temptation, isolation

Desolation, isolation

Let it go, and so to fade away

To let it go, and so fade fade fade away

Not fade away, hey

Not fade away, no no

Not fade away

I'm wide awake

I'm wide awake

Wide awake

I'm wide awake

Wide awake

I'm not sleeping

Oh, no no

I'm not sleeping

Come on down

Come on down

Come on down

Sing it

Come on down

"A Sort of Homecoming" (live from Wembley)

And you know it's time to go

Through the sleet and driving snow

Across the fields of mourning

Lights in the distance

And you hunger for the time

Time to heal, desire, time

And your earth moves beneath

Your own dream landscape

Oh, on borderland we run and still we run

I'll be there, I'll be there, tonight

We'll build a bridge across the sea and land

The city walls are all pulled down

The dust a smokescreen all around

Faces ploughed like fields

That once gave no resistance

Oh, on borderland we run and still we run

We run and don't look back

I'll be there, I'll be there

Tonight, tonight

I'll be there tonight

I'll be there tonight

Now the wind will crack in wintertime

This bomb-blast lightning waltz

No spoken words, just a scream

Tonight, we'll build a bridge across the sea and land

I'll be there, I'll be there

Tonight, tonight

And your heart beats so slow

Through the rain and fallen snow

Across the fields of mourning

Lights in the distance

Oh, don't sorrow,

No don't weep for tonight, with you

I am coming home

I am coming home

"The Three Sunrises"

Spirit of the rising sun, lift me up

Hold me there and never let me fall

Love me 'til I die, my heart won't wait

Soon I will be done

In this love song

Love song

Love song

Love song

Hey, hey, love won't find

Find it's own way home

In this love song

Love song

Love song

Love song

Sunshine, sunshine on me

Sunshine, sunshine on me

In this love song

Love song

Love song

Love song

Hey, hey, love won't find

Find it's way home

In this love song

Love song

Love song

Love song

Sunshine on me

Bring it through to my home

I would give you everything

I will give you my desire

Sunshine, sunshine on me

Sunshine, sunshine on me

"Love Comes Tumbling" (version I)

Love don't need to find a way

You find your own way

I forget that I can't stay

And so I say that

All roads lead to where you are

All roads lead to where you are

The seed is spilled, the bed defiled

For you, a virgin bride

Hide yourself in someone else

Don't find yourself in me

I can't lift you up again

Love comes tumbling down again

Love don't need to find a way

You find your own way

I forget that you can stay

And so I say that

All roads lead to where you are

All roads lead to where you are
